Be morality

 Pinqing Qiu

My name

My grandmother gave me a name called Pinqing. When my grandmother and grandfather were thinking of how they should name me, they hope their grandchild to have good morality when I grow up. Then, my name starts with "Pin." It means morality. The meaning of morality in Chinese has two words. The other word is "De." My grandfather thinks that I should call Deqing because "De" has much positive meanings, such as justice and respect. My grandmother doesn't think "De" is the right name for a girl, so she named me Pinqing. The word "Pin" doesn't have many people to name their children. The word "Qing" doesn't have any meaning. It just sounds good to name a girl. I glad that my grandmother named me Pinqing because I have never heard about anyone call "Pinqing." Even though it sounds weird in English, It still doesn't have that many people call this name. Especially the word "Pin." A name can have many meanings, or it doesn't have any meanings. No matter what, we should respect the name that our family members give us. The names are born with a blessing.

My name---revision

Double Water

Everyone should have their own name, and the name was significant in the first impression that helped people identify themselves. My grandfather named me Yuanyuan Fang because he listened to my great-grandmother and said that my life and my name need water. I  also like my name very much because I was always the only one in class with a unique name in China and The United States. People still believed the right word could give their good luck in the future, which people are called Geomatic Omen in China. Geomantic Omen was a peculiar culture and traditional theory of China because it could use energy to improve people’s well being, success, and fortune in the relationships between nature and humans. My Chinese character is 沅沅 that there were three dots as the drop of water in my name. There is a famous river called the Yuan River in China, so my name means a lot of water. When I was young, I asked my grandfather why I had double Yuan, and my grandfather replied, “He hopes his granddaughter's life will get better and better.” I would never change my name since my grandfather gave my name at birth, and I have great respect for my grandfather.

My Name

2nd draft

The Hope of My Name

When I was a child, I hated my name. In addition, I was envious of my girlfriends that had some nice, beautiful and female names because I had a name that was more common for boys. My name followed me grew up with some unhappy feelings, but as I was growing up, then, later on, I began to cherish my name.

My Chinese name is Jianping. Jian() means sword in English, and ping is the letter for boy in Chinese. As a result, my name was ridiculed by many people. They always asked why I had a boy’s name, and did you want to be a boy? In addition, someone once said that I had a boy’s character like my name. It was given to me by my father. He hoped I was a boy because he had two daughters already. In that time, Chinese people preferred boys to girls. Moreover, people would despise the family because there was a deeply traditional concep in China.

It is a leaning class that accept something we don’t like. I hated my name because it was attached to some hope, but I was not the hope that they wished for. However, I like it now because I learned from the name to accept, and to be strong because of love.

My Uncle’s Blessing

Second Draft

My Uncle’s Blessing

Do you know who was the first Chinese woman in space? Her name is Liu Yang ( ). I’m honored to have the same name as her. My father told me that his brother chose it for me. My uncle wished me to study well so that I could study abroad.

He chose this name because “刘” means “Stay” and “洋” means “abroad. He really hoped that I could stay and study abroad when I got olderThe name is his blessing to me. Maybe because of his blessing, my family got a chance to immigrate to the United States. I am learning ESL and live abroad now. It’s really a nice story behind my name. It was like a dream come true. However, I don’t like this name. There are so many people with the same as me because in China almost all parents want their kids to study abroad. I think it’s not special at allIn my high school, I met two schoolmates who had the same name. It caused me some trouble. For example, it was hard to find my new classroom when the first day I went to my high school. We only find our classrooms according to our own names, but there were three same names in three different classrooms.

Finally, I’m glad to share my nickname with you. It is just Yang and sounds like “Young”. I prefer it because I am young now and I think the better world is waiting for me.

 Yuting Fan

Invisible Love

I have a name which is called Yuting Fan that makes me proud. Most people have their fathers’ last name and only a few special people with their mothers’ last name, so my last name Fan follows my fathers. My given name Yuting was given to me by my father. Yu  ting  is two separate characters in Chinese. Yu  means jade or emerald, pure, hard, shiny and nice. Ting  means kind and beautiful. My parents want me to be a nice and beautiful person, so my father gave me the name.

I am my parents’ first child. My father was very excited when he knew my mother was pregnant. He started to think about that what were good names for girls or boys every day until I was born. They couldn’t know their kid’s gender because it is illegal in China.China implemented family planning policy that protected by the law. For example, people who lived in city or were government workers could only have one child. On the other hand, people who lived in the countryside could have up to two children. They could lose their job or face high fines if they violated the law. However, many Chinese people, especially the elderly had a serious ideology of preference for sons and they would try their best to give birth to a boy, so there was a law in China that doctors cannot tell their patients the gender of fetus in order to prevent abortion. My father thought Yuting is very special and a few people had this name at that time, so he chose this name for me. In addition, they said Yuting sounds nice.

I had an early nickname called pully girl( 狗女) when I was a little girl. Because I was born two months earlier, I was very weak and often sick. My family’s financial situation was poor, and my parents worried that I would die. They wanted me to have a healthy body and grow up like a dog because dogs are easy to raise. Exactly, I was born in the Chinese year of the dog. Therefore, they gave me the nickname.

I love my name even when I came to the United States. Many Chinese people use an English name when they are living in the United States, but I decided to keep using my Chinese name. My name contains the deep love of my parents for me, and I feel so lucky and happy to have it.
