My Name

2nd draft

The Hope of My Name

When I was a child, I hated my name. In addition, I was envious of my girlfriends that had some nice, beautiful and female names because I had a name that was more common for boys. My name followed me grew up with some unhappy feelings, but as I was growing up, then, later on, I began to cherish my name.

My Chinese name is Jianping. Jian() means sword in English, and ping is the letter for boy in Chinese. As a result, my name was ridiculed by many people. They always asked why I had a boy’s name, and did you want to be a boy? In addition, someone once said that I had a boy’s character like my name. It was given to me by my father. He hoped I was a boy because he had two daughters already. In that time, Chinese people preferred boys to girls. Moreover, people would despise the family because there was a deeply traditional concep in China.

It is a leaning class that accept something we don’t like. I hated my name because it was attached to some hope, but I was not the hope that they wished for. However, I like it now because I learned from the name to accept, and to be strong because of love.
