The Origin of a Name

“Ya Qiao” is the name my mother named to me. “Qiao” is my family name, as far as I know, there are very few groups of people who have this family name “Qiao” in China. My first name is“Ya”, the pronunciation sounds like “yea” in English, and it means elegant and quiet in Chinese.I guess my parents had a wish and they want me to be this kind of person. Here has a story about my name. At the beginning of the story, I’m not the first owner of this name. This name was my grandfather given to my mother. My grandfather was an intellectual at that age, and my mother always mentions he is a person who loved to read and is very eloquent. I believe how my mother described my grandfather because this name is rare to me. Regrettably, my mother didn’t have the same sense as me in her childhood. Since her classmates made fun of the name, she felt quite upset. Therefore, my mother begged my grandfather to change her name. Until my mother became an adult, she just realized how meaningful is “Ya Qiao” this name. Unlike the experience like my mother, I really love this name even ever single word. Also, I realize more and more that how unique the name is. In my opinion, that is really referents me. Even though I have a cute English name, I prefer people to call my Chinese name. By the way, here is another story that I have a nickname – “Qiao Qiao”. However, there are not many know my nickname, and now only my mother calls me by my nickname. I’m so grateful that my mother has kept this nickname to me.
